Remembering and Honoring: First Church Embroidery Project  Learning Session and Workshop

  • Date: Sunday, April 23, 2023
  • Time: 12:30pm1:30pm EDT
  • Location: Margaret Jewett Hall

Join local textile artists Sarah Fuijwara and Gail Willett, along with other project leaders for a session in which we take the next steps in our community project to embroider names of enslaved persons connected with First Church into a large-scale piece of fabric art. We’ll begin by sharing and discussing one or two “Stories Impossible To Tell” about enslaved persons whose names we will eventually embroider. Sarah and Gail will guide us through an exercise of sewing and practicing our embroidery skills on muslin sacks. This activity is inspired by Tiya Miles’s National Book Award Winner All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack, a Black Family Keepsake, which was one of our First Church Summer Reads last year. Please be thinking in advance about three family keepsakes you would put in your sack to pass along to future generations.
