Come Hell or High Water: The Battle for Turkey Creek follows the painful, but inspiring journey of Derrick Christopher Evans, a Boston teacher who moves home to coastal Mississippi when the graves of his ancestors are bulldozed to make way for the sprawling city of Gulfport. Over a decade, Derrick and his neighbors stand up to corporations and politicians and face Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil disaster in their struggle for self-determination and justice.
Last fall, Derrick was an inaugural grant recipient of the Bob Moses Fund for Education & Organizing, a partnership between Cambridge Community Foundation and the Moses Family. His experience building a movement offers lessons for Cambridge as we seek to further equity and justice in our own community. We’re pleased to welcome Derrick alongside documentarian Leah Mahan for a screening of the one-hour documentary, followed by conversation with Dr. Janet Moses, Cambridge resident and long-time community builder. We hope you’ll join us for this engaging event!
