Reparations Fund Matching Grant Update: We’re (almost) Halfway There!

July 31, 2024

Honor Dan Smith and Alice Kidder, key advocates of the First Church Reparations Fund, by contributing this summer to the Fund. To inspire first-time contributors, your gift of any size will be doubled up to a total of $25,000 if donated by Labor Day, September 2, 2024.

$12,362 in new donations has been raised so far!

Previous donors are also encouraged to honor Dan and remember Alice with an additional gift. With the matching grant and contributions by former donors, $25,024 has been given to the Reparations Fund since June 1. You may give online; please be sure to choose “Reparations Fund.” Or you may write a check payable to “First Church in Cambridge” with “Reparations Fund” in the memo line.

In 2024, donations to the Reparations Fund will be given as follows:

  • 1/3 to “The Collective,” people of African descent engaged in activism and anti-racist
work who, over the past 3 years of the Reparations Fund, have supported
immigration needs, disaster relief in Haiti, and small business ventures, and more.
  • 1/3 to the Lloyd family’s Slave Legacy History Coalition [the Lloyds are direct
descendants of enslaved people in First Church’s records]
  • 1/3 to further reparative efforts, including ongoing outreach to indigenous
communities, to be determined by a small Beloved Community subcommittee of
majority People of Color First Church members.
