Thursday Drop-In Bible Study Comes to a Close

October 10, 2024

Having fulfilled its purpose, giving members and friends a place online to gather for Bible study during the COVID crisis, our weekly online drop-in Thursday night Bible study has drawn to a close. A good time was had by all! At our peak, our address list included 14 or 15 names, across denominations and interfaith, enriching our discussion beyond measure.

Here are a few thoughts from participants regarding our group:

For over four years, our group of multiple participants read more than a dozen biblical texts including Torah, historical, poetical, wisdom, prophetic, Gospel and epistle texts. We discussed, digressed, disputed, pondered, and wondered together as our lives intermingled in study and sharing.

This was the best Bible study I’ve ever experienced! The input from an eclectic membership enriched us all, and I learned from each and every member of the group.

Our Bible study discussions were rich and illuminating as we shared our understandings – and questions. We read selected books of the Bible through the perspectives of devotion, history, literature, and culture. The texts were perplexing and illuminating, dry and radiant.

I loved sharing our spiritual journeys, the silence given to contemplate, and all the openness to unique perspectives and all sorts of questions.

It was an absolute joy to get to know each person so well as we explored what is important in life. Such talent and wisdom in our little group!

Thanks to all for letting me join the search for God’s Word in Scripture. Our time to study the Bible remotely was a time for that purpose under Heaven.

We’re confident that our experience was only a waystation on the road of integrating the Bible into the life of First Church. We look forward to more opportunities to come!
